The History of Trelawney Fish

Trelawney Fish was established by Godfrey Adams in 1982.
The business started on the market before moving several times, eventually relocating to its current premises on the Strand, just a short walk from Newlyn Harbour and Fish Market which is the main source of the business.
Since its founding, the company has grown from a small local supplier into a well-respected name in the seafood industry. Through decades of dedication and expertise, Trelawney Fish has built a reputation for quality and reliability, attracting a loyal customer base and nurturing longstanding relationships with local fishermen.
The company has strong ties to the historic Newlyn Fishing port and we are proud to support the market and offer our customers the finest seafood that this historic port has to offer.
Our proximity to the bustling harbour ensures a steady supply of the freshest catches, which are carefully selected and handled by an experienced team. This close relationship with the fishing community not only supports local livelihoods but also guarantees that Trelawney Fish can offer a diverse range of seafood, from prime Cornish Dovers and Turbots to seasonal fish varieties sought after by chefs and seafood lovers alike.
Over the years Trelawney has exported regularly all over Europe, predominantly France and Spain.
Today, we are focused and are committed to supplying our customers, both wholesale and retail, with the best that the South West can offer.

Our story begins in 1982, right here on the historic quayside of Newlyn Harbour.

Trelawney Fish was founded with a simple, yet enduring, mission: to bring the freshest, most vibrant fish from the local boats directly to our customers. In the heart of one of England's most important fishing ports, we set up our first stall at the bustling Newlyn Fish Market.
For over 40 years, our commitment has been unwavering. We've built our reputation on the strong relationships we hold with the hardworking local skippers and fishermen who land their daily catch just a stone's throw from our door. This direct connection ensures that the fish we offer is of the highest quality, caught responsibly and landed fresh.
From our early days at the market, we grew and eventually moved to our current home just moments down the road. This move allowed us to expand our operations, establishing both our retail shop and a state-of-the-art processing facility. Today, we're proud to be a family-run business, with generations of expertise guiding our work. Our team expertly handles and prepares a wide variety of species, from the humble sardine to the prized monkfish, always with the same care and attention to detail.
While we've modernized our facilities, the heart of our business remains the same. We are a crucial part of Newlyn's fishing community, continuing a centuries-old tradition of supplying exceptional Cornish seafood. We are passionate about what we do and honored to share the fruits of the sea with you, whether you're a local resident, a celebrated chef, or a customer from across the globe.

Our Place in Newlyn's Story

Trelawney Fish is more than just a business; we are a thread in the rich tapestry of Newlyn's maritime history. Newlyn has been a working port for centuries, its identity forged by the sea. The harbour has evolved from a pilchard-fishing hub to a major modern port, but its spirit endures. By sourcing our fish from the local fleet, we help to sustain this vital industry and ensure that the legacy of Newlyn's fishing community continues for generations to come.
